How to Become a Successful Cosmologist Starting from Grade 10 In India

““Cosmology is not just a subject—it’s a journey into the origin of the universe, as well as the self.”

Cosmology not only helps us understand the cosmos but also reveals deeper truths about ourselves. How? Let’s dive into the world of cosmology! First, we’ll explore who a cosmologist is and how you can become a successful one—especially in India.

Do you find yourself staring at the night sky, wondering about black holes, galaxies, or the birth of the universe? If yes, you may already have the heart of a cosmologist. And the best part? You can begin preparing for this fascinating journey as early as Class 10!

In this blog, we’ll break down the step-by-step roadmap, essential skills, habits, and resources to help you begin your journey to becoming a successful cosmologist.

What Is Cosmology?

As I’ve discussed in detail in my previous blog, you can click on the word Cosmology above to learn more. But here’s a quick summary:

Cosmology is the scientific study of the universe as a whole—its origin (like the Big Bang), structure (like galaxy clusters), evolution, and possible fate.

It combines physics, mathematics, astronomy, and sometimes even philosophy to answer big questions like:

What is dark matter and dark energy?

Why is the universe expanding?

Will the universe ever end?

Roadmap to Become a Cosmologist (From Class 10 to PhD)

Here’s a broad step-by-step path you can follow:

Roadmap for cosmologists

Stage What You Should Do

✅️ Class 10 Build strong basics in Math & Science, especially Physics

✅️ Class 11–12 Choose PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths). Optional: Computer Science

✅️ After 12th Clear IIT JEE / CUET and pursue BSc in Physics / Engineering Physics

✅️ After BSc Crack IIT-JAM / JEST for MSc in Physics

✅️ After MSc Do a PhD in Cosmology / Astrophysics from top institutes like IUCAA, TIFR, IISc, or international universities

Subjects & Skills You Should Master

“The universe is written in the language of mathematics.” – Galileo

Here are the key subjects and skills you’ll need:

✅ Essential Subjects:

Physics – Especially mechanics, waves, thermodynamics, relativity, quantum mechanics

Mathematics – Calculus, algebra, statistics, differential equationComputers

computer Science – Learn Python or C++ for simulations and data analysis

✅ Essential Skills:

  • Critical thinking & problem-solving
  • Curiosity and creativity
  • Research & observation skills
  • Communication (for research publications or explaining ideas)

I’ve already explained these skills in my previous blog — Top 5 Skills for Becoming a Cosmologist — where I go deep into how and why these skills matter.

Daily Habits to Start Now (Even in Class 10)

1. Read at least one science article or book page daily

2. Watch videos from NASA, ISRO, or YouTube channels like PBS Space Time or Kurzgesagt

3. Practice 1–2 advanced physics or math problems daily (e.g. from H.C. Verma — great for Class 11 & 12 concepts)

4. Stay updated with space news (e.g. Chandrayaan, James Webb Telescope)

5. Keep a ‘Cosmic Journal’ – write down what you learn about the universe each day

🎯 How to Convince Parents About Your Dream

Let’s be honest: convincing parents about a career in cosmology in India can sometimes be harder than solving a complex math problem—especially if they’re not from a science background.

Here’s what worked for me:

1. I showed them real examples of successful Indian cosmologists.

2. I explained that cosmology is part of major space research, at ISRO, NASA, and top global institutions.

3. I talked about career options like professor, researcher, data scientist, or science communicator.

Once they understood the real-world potential, it became easier.

You don’t have to wait till college to explore the universe.

Start small. Stay curious. Work daily.

The cosmos is ready to reveal its secrets to those who ask the right questions.
